Kindrie

PS Does anyone identify with Kindrie?  I like him a lot better since he developed a backbone, but one has to remember his history, which almost de-boned him.  Maybe I just have trouble with passive characters ...

Yes, identify fairly strongly with Kindrie. He reminds me of myself in that he is far too passive and timid. However, I envy his inner strength and his determination once he commits to a task. Jame might be more appealing, and I do love her dearly, but she and her bother are so impulsive and so weak at their core that in ways I think of them as weaker than Kindrie. I think if you dropped either of them into the middle of a totalitarian society, they would either take over, committing many of the same sins as the previous rulers, or they might get themselves killed. Kindrie, especially now that he has some more self-confidence, he might lead a revolution.

Hmm, okay, that sounds kind of arrogant for me to say. IT sounds like I am telling you what your characters are like. However it is my impression.

By the way, it seems to be a cruel torture of the likes you would find in the inner sanctums of Restormir for you to have a link on your website to excerpts from current work and have nothing there.

By the way, is there any source for getting _A Ballad of the White Plague: the Casebook_? I did love the Sherlock Holmes story.

As a last question, do you think about etymology very much in naming people and places? For example, Restormir seems to have positive connotations, despite it not beign a verypositive place.

I think if you dropped Jame into a totalitarian state, she might destroy it, but have nothing to put in its place, She's not very political. In the Kencyrath, at least Tori would have some idea what to do next, and Kindrie would be there to balance them. Something like that, anyway. But yes, Kindrie is potentially stronger than either of them.

About the "work in progress" page, I tried to post something there but it seems to be another ghost gallery, with controls unconnected to the site. Am finding a lot of those.

Glad you liked the Holmes story. I have a few copies of the Casebook, but don't think Hypatia ever made it generally available, or printed more than a couple of copies. Alan Newcomer of Hypatia may have more, if they survived a disastrous apartment fire, but I no longer know how to reach him.

Yes, I generally think a lot about the etymology of names. One trick I use is to think of a word that best describes a character, check a good thesaurus, and then go to the OED. As I recall, though, Restormir is a variation on the name of real castle in England. Not all my names are hits. At least this one has "storm" in the middle of it.

Since you double-post to lj now, I'll comment there now, ok? It's easier because you're showing up on my reading list/friends page.

I think maybe I'll stop double-posting and stick to the LJ. This is getting too confusing, and a lot more people are responding than I expected. It's kind of overwhelming.

If you do stick to LJ (which I think makes a lot of sense), don't forget to have a prominent link to your LJ so people who look for up-to-date news or comments, etc. know where to go.

.. my own blog is so rarely updated I simply double-post to both now (but then it is only rarely, so not much reaction anyway). I still like my own blog layout best, heh, so I'm not closing that - also: if LJ should change policies or get nasty or whatever, I do have a place to fall back on.

You're right though that it is double the effort to check, as people who know me on LJ don't read my usual blog and vice versa.
